Collaborative Project - Working on a Soundscape (OUAN406)

We will use a fast paced and frenetic drumbeat as a backdrop to this project, as it's fitting to convey the passion and energy that's associated with street art. The art form is raw, unrefined and has a joyous, untethered spirit to it. If the drums are fast paced and keep up with the bombastic tone of the visuals, the two will mesh together really neatly. The music should be bold and build to a crescendo of energetic, er, energy.

I first found inspiration from the drumbeat in Paul Simon's "The Obvious Child". The use of African drums give a sense of worldly-ness to the music, exactly the kind of vibe I'd like to recreate given the fact that one of the main elements of our animation is that we're drawing from styles and location from around the world. We should make something in that same vein, but perhaps by using items like pans, pot lids and slabs of wood. I'd like this ramshackle sound for two reasons. Firstly because I don't know how to procure an actual drum, and secondly because I suppose these kind of items give the music a rather raw and rustic tone.

Since each of us in my group is animating our own 20 second segment of the film, the important thing is that each segment is timed well to match the drumbeat. That way the animation will flow smoooooothly.

I won't record this until a bit later, as it's not really a priority and we have bigger animation fish to fry. It's just been in the back of my head.

I'm keen to record this with my group, though!

Collaborative Thing - Interrim Crit (OUAN406)

This crit was really handy for making sure our group wasn't about to fly off the straight and narrow, and the feedback we received was generally positive although there are plenty of things we have to worry about. Having the opportunity to bring all our work so far together was the most helpful aspect of this session as it helped to cement in my mind the degree to which we had progressed, which I was anxious about previously.

Before the critical session I had not felt that our group has been communicating as much as we should have been. We have all been working on separate parts of the project without having a proper plan. We knew the essence of what we wanted to do but had no storyboard.

This was properly brought to light by our tutor voicing his concerns that he couldn't quite see what we were planning. We're admittedly as not as far along with production as we'd like to be. We don't have a group storyboard yet.

On the positive side, we got good responses to our concept and the energetic way we want to show the power of street art. People liked our idea of animating onto various locations around the world to convey unity and the idea that street art is the art of the PEOPLE and whatnot.

Our backgrounds are coming along well. Our plan is to each draw a series of backgrounds in varying styles from around the world to make the animation look eclectic.
